In a light-hearted parody of our past federal election local Milton Councillor Rick Di Lorenzo held an election sign parody fundraiser for Milton District Hospital Foundation

(MDHF). A Sign was free to Milton residents if they made a small donation ($10 or more) to a local Milton charity, agree to follow local bylaws on placement and promise not to ever

throw it in the garbage. MDHF was Di Lorenzo’s preferred charity and local Milton residents supported this by donating $2343 directly to the hospital for the campaign.

Aparna Rangnekar remembers that when they were looking for a home to grow roots and settle down her husband suggested looking at Milton, ‘due to its cultural diversity’. They fell in love with the town after spending a Saturday afternoon here.

Born and raised in Mumbai, India, and living for a number of years in the Middle East, Aparna now lives in Milton with husband, Sanjay and their two children.

‘Both my husband and I are extremely passionate about the Arts and always excited to be involved in the process of making art and bringing it to audiences.’ The ‘Appy Place is a dream they have had since studying Art in India.

On September 15th at Chudleigh’s farm in Milton the Milton Chamber of Commerce held their annual awards ceremony for the 2020 Community winners. The awards celebrate excellence in Milton and with the challenges people and businesses have been facing this past year it’s even more important to recognize success & perseverance. It was an elegant but socially distanced event with a small number of people keeping within covid19 limitations.

On Saturday October 2, the Community Foundation of Halton North (CFHN) hosted Webathon 2021 and reached its goal of $100,000. This event was a hybrid event, combining CFHN’s physical presence at both the Milton and Georgetown Farmers’ Markets and at the new home of CFHN, with an online celebration on a platform called Pheedloop which featured local charities.

The online virtual piece of Webathon 2021 included 10 hours of programming, exhibiting a series of interviews and videos. It talked about the work of CFHN, local participating charities, generous sponsors and the importance of these coordinated efforts within the community.

October 16th outside the Home Depot Plaza marked the 9th edition of Game On Street Hockey Tournament which has raised over $27,000 for the Reach out Centre for Kids (ROCK).

The weather listened to the Mayor of Milton and the rain didn’t come! All day long both kids and adults were having a blast. This was marked the return of the physical in-person event (last year was virtual) and it was held in a controlled environment where attendees had to show proof of vaccination at the entrance before being admitted. MC Chris Mei helped officiate the event and kept the energy going throughout the day.

Milton’s annual Bocce Ball Tournament took place Saturday October 16 at the Italian Cultural Centre of Milton raising funds for the centre’s roof rehabilitation. The event aptly names Beer, Bites and Bocce was a great success. The clouds and wind left just when the games were starting to make for a sunny and warm game day event. The Rotary Club of Milton also donated their time to help with the BBQ and food.

To celebrate Ontario Public Library Week (17-23 October) and Canadian Library Month, Milton Public Library will be hosting its fourth annual fine forgiveness programme in partnership with the Milton Community Resource Centre in support of MCRC’s Infant Food Bank.

The Food for Fines campaign will run from 17th October to 7th November, 2021. This initiative invites patrons to bring in nonperishable food items or diapers to any of MPL’s three locations, to help local families in need, in exchange for the waiving of fines on overdue library materials.

On Friday afternoon, September 10, after another sellout event of 288 golfers at Granite Ridge Golf Club, the 21st Mayor’s Golf Tournament for United Way in Milton announced a net donation to the upcoming 2021 United Way campaign of $200,000, an increase of almost $8000 over the previous best year. With no closing banquet this year, the initial total was announced as $196,318 before the golfers teed off. Additional funds were added during the event. Then double Gold sponsor Mattamy Homes generously offered to ‘top up’ the total to an even $200,000. The event benefits from tremendous support from dozens of corporations doing business in the Town of Milton, with record numbers of major sponsors including 24 Gold and 30 Silver corporate sponsors.

Earlier this year, for the first time across Canada, the Navy League of Canada was honored by the Town of Milton when Mayor Gordon Krantz proclaimed May 2021 as Navy League Month!

The Milton Branch of the Navy League of Canada was established 35 years ago with the intent of raising good citizens through the Sea Cadet program by co-sponsoring the Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps (RCSCC) CHAUDIERE, which runs a program for young Canadians ages 12 – 19. Last year, the Milton Branch opened another cadet unit for younger kids. The Navy League Cadet Corps (NLCC)ADVENTURE is solely run by the Milton Branch, and it runs a program developed for younger audiences, ages 9-12 on Friday evenings. Both programs run along nautical lines and cadets learn the basics of seamanship, navigation, nautical knots and other topics in citizenship and leadership.
