Milton had multiple celebrations in August to recognize both India and Pakistan Independence days. Including an annual tradition by local resident Rick Di Lorenzo of inviting people to his home to celebrate, raise the flag and gather together over cake & chai. Both days included the singing of the corresponding national anthem along with Canada’s and distributions of free flags and pins of Pakistan, India and Canada.

“I greatly appreciate coming together with my friends and neighbours so we can celebrate our heritages together. My father immigrated to Canada when he was 16 from Italy and I have fond memories as a young boy celebrating my Italian heritage at Columbus Centre. Canada is a mosaic where we are proud to be Canadian and at the same time remember our cultural heritages” said Rick Di Lorenzo

“I want to especially thank Gurmail Saggu who volunteered to provide Chai on both days. Kanwal Wassem who provided the Pakistan signage. Archna Rai and Umesh for helping with food and drinks on India’s Independence day. We are blessed in Milton to have an overall community where no one is excluded and everyone is welcome. While I provided the space, many other volunteers came with additional food and drinks on both days so it was very much a community driven celebration”
