The Milton U10 AA Winter hawks hosted their second annual Ball Hockey Charity Tournament during the Milton Downtown BIA Holiday market on Nov. 27, in support of the team and the Townsend Smith Hospice Foundation. The event raised over $4,000, which was split evenly between the two organizations. The Winterhawks were proud to be able to present a cheque for $2,065.63 to Holly Lillico of TSF on during an outdoor, socially-distanced gathering on Dec. 19.

The event is organized by team parents and coaches and supported by the Downtown Milton BIA and the overall Winterhawks organization. We were thrilled by the support the event received this year, with dozens of local and small businesses providing sponsorship and raffle prizes, despite having had an incredibly difficult year because of the challenges posed by Covid-19. Several bigger companies also provided sponsorship, while the Milton Menace and local representatives from all three levels of government — Adam van Koeverden, Parm Gill and Mayor Gord Krantz — stopped by to support the event.

The Milton minor hockey community was also a huge factor in the event’s success, with rep, house league and parent teams taking part. The U10 A Milton Winterhawks took the top spot after some hard-fought battles.

For our coaching staff, the goal has always been to develop the boys not just as hockey players but also as people, and for them to become young citizens who understand the value of thinking beyond themselves and actively giving back.

We hoped the event — and the incredibly level of community support it received — helped show the importance of community engagement, and we believe it showcased what a strong community Milton is and how much it values the need for a hospice and Townsend Smith Foundation. We were touched by how many people were willing to donate prizes and buy raffle tickets when they realized the event helped support Townsend Smith.

Sohail Naseer said “I have a passion to serve as a volunteer for the betterment of the community.” Friend and fellow Rotarian, Ries Boers said that he is “so proud of Sohail on his nomination to District Governor of Southwestern Ontario. Sohail has worked very hard for the Milton Rotary Club and together with his wife Rubina they never fail to step up to the plate to assist or run an event!”

The 9th Annual Milton Film Festival came back, in a somewhat different form than had been planned just a few weeks ago. Due to the ongoing closure of the First Ontario Arts Centre Milton, and now all theatres in Ontario, festival organizers have had to adapt and go with an all virtual format for a second year in a row.

“We were really hoping to give our audience a theatrical movie-going experience once again, even arranging to show films in Georgetown. But this latest COVID wave means that won’t be possible just yet” explains festival founder and director Jennifer Smith. “Fortunately, our virtual festival platform Eventive makes it relatively easy for us to pivot from hybrid to virtual mode. Everyone seemed to have a very positive experience with it last year – especially since it allows people to attend without having to travel, and to watch films on their own schedule.” The Festival kicked off January 29th with all 14 feature films being rolled out over nine days until February 6th:

Shortly after Christmas Milton was honored with a limited edition Milton-themed Monoply game aptly titled “Milton-Opoly”. Demand for this blew up with each shipment arriving at Milton Walmart quickly selling out within 1 day. In a very short time period over 800 units were sold to Milton residents looking for some nostalgia family fun with a Milton twist.

With local flair included in the game such as “You ate too much Tiramisu from Pasqualino’s! Lose 1 turn to recover’ or just the thrill of being able to buy “Milton District High School” or “Craig Kielburger Secondary School”. Properties included local Milton streets as well as locations like Mill Pond, Milton Leisure Centre, Milton Mall, to name just a few. The Amy Flowers local real estate team got into the fun hosting a contest giveaway asking Miltonians why they love Milton for the chance to win one of 5 of the games.

Just before our recent lockdown East Side Marios in Milton held a successful fundraiser for Food 4 Kids. They collected food both food as well as cash donations.
