Halton Women’s Place was delighted to receive the proceeds from the Knights of Columbus/Team Garber Charity Poker Tournament which totaled an amazing $17,000. This amount represented not only the generosity of the tournament participants but also the unwavering dedication of the Knights of Columbus and Team Garber in supporting causes that make a difference in people’s lives and supporting the important work of Halton Women’s Place.
From May 16th to June 3rd the Firstontario Arts Centre in Milton was the home to Kala: The Colours of South Asia, an art exhibit showcasing South Asian art forms features both established as well as emerging local artists.
Over 300 guests attended Kala’s gallery opening night. It was one of the best openings the gallery has seen, cementing that the South Asian community was waiting for an opportunity like this to see themselves represented. This exhibit displayed various South Asian art techniques and everyone was encouraged to come and appreciate the beautiful art on display. This art exhibition was the first of its kind celebration of South Asian Heritage Month in Milton. The exhibition has artists from India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan participating.
Bradi McCoy is a bright, bubbly, enthusiastic 22-year-old young woman from Milton and is well loved in the community. For many years she has shared her talents with the Town of Milton in the I-CAN special needs programs, and in various leadership roles in aquatics and recreation. Bradi is currently an EA with the Halton District School Board and her dream is to become a teacher.
On March 9th of this year Bradi was the victim of a devastating acid attack near her home. She has suffered life-altering injuries and will have a long recovery period.
Pride Month in Milton kicked off at Milton Town Hall on June 1st with the Pride Flag Raising. The ceremony was organized by PRISM Milton’s 2SLGBTQIA Group.
The Town of Milton started official raising the Pride Flag back in 2018 and this is the 5th year running with a record turn out at Town Hall. There were several youth speakers representing local schools in Milton talking about both the progress that has been made as well as challenges still to be overcome.
The Association of Nigerian Community in Milton (ANCiM) made a generous cheque presentation for Zakatul-Fitr to our Milton Halal Food Bank in Milton. This is to help families in need, the food bank is located at 50 Steeles Ave E Unit 203 Megan Saliba with MPP Parm Gill’s office also presented a certificate of appreciation to the association. The food bank thanked ANCiM for their contribution. Milton Councillors Adil Khalqi and Sameera Ali were on hand to also show their support.
Many people wrongfully (IMO) say Milton is the town that Mattamy built. But no business or family has had a greater positive impact to our town than Mario has had.
Mario moved to Milton in 1953, sponsored by his brother who arrived 2 years earlier. From the early days Mario always worked hard, from working on the quarry by Kelso, to then working at the iconic P.L. Robertson factory with his brother. To starting Durante’s Service Station in 1963 with a snack bar attached that served truckers from Dufferin Aggregates. Many successful family businesses have followed since then, too numerous to list.
The members of Grace Anglican Church hope to invite everyone (and anyone!) in Milton to visit their beautiful church for a Community Meal on the first Thursday of every month. In April 2023 this happened on the second Thursday instead as the church observed Holy Week leading up to Easter.
Recently, in April 2023, Grace welcomed 60 people to a delicious meal of ham, scalloped potatoes, salad, garlic bread and hot cross buns. 3 large hams (The largest of these weighed 22 kg.) were donated by International Delicatessen on the Guelph Line.
The Community Meals were first held in February 2015.
The 2023 Milton Spring Clean-ups have officially started with the ara along Scott Blvd south of Derry being the first thanks to Sameera Ali and Sarah Marshall who organized a community clean-up with the help of many Milton volunteers.
Mayor Krantz was in attendance to say some words of encouragement to the many volunteers who came out to help.
Milton – The Sea Cadet program in Milton provides youth with a cost-effective youth program that provide opportunities for cadets to learn valuable life skills. The program runs along naval lines and is co-sponsored by the Canadian Armed Forces and the Navy League of Canada (a civilian volunteer-led group).
April is Sikh Heritage month and the Town of Milton officially recognized the month with a proclamation and flag raising at Milton Town Hall.
Sikh Heritage Month is the perfect opportunity to show honour to the growing and vibrant Sikh Community in Milton. The Sikh community has made significant contributions to the growth of Milton and its prosperity, and will continue to do so.
