Milton’s Coptic Christians gathered to mark the annual St. Abanoub festival with a picnic July 28. Abanoub was an Egyptian child saint who was executed for refusing to leave Christianity at the age of 12. Members of Milton’s St George and Abanoub Coptic Orthodox Church gathered to mark Abanoub’s feast day.
August 13th, 2019 was cause for celebration as families gathered to observe Eid ul Adha, at a gathering hosted by local food blogger and Instagram star Tabassum Wyne of Kashmiri Foodie. Wyne partnered with the Milton Federal Liberal Association and new Liberal candidate Adam van Koeverden, and the party was held at their Main Street office in downtown Milton.
The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) is a sect of Hinduism. On August 24, 2019 ISKCON Milton gathered at Grace Anglican Church mark the first appearance of Lord Krishna, who first appeared 5200 years ago.
The 39th Annual Strawberry Fair took place on Saturday, June 22 – a day which just might have been the most beautiful in the summer of 2019 thus far. Presented as always by the Milton District Hospital Auxiliary, the event drew crowds from all over the city.
On a breezy summer evening, participants of Arts Milton’s Friendship Project gathered at the Milton Sports Centre park for a picnic celebrating the completion of this year’s program. The Friendship Project, now in its second year, connects newcomers to Canada with community host families. Together the partnered families attend arts and culture activities together from winter to spring each year.
July 13 was a sunny warm day, with a light breeze. It was the perfect summer day for the annual picnic Milton (MAM) at the Croatian Club Soccer Park.
The event included food, and, family activities as well as shows for the kids. The association began with a group of Muslim families meeting in basements for fellowship, and grew from there. “Miltonians are invited here, and on top of that, the proceeds from it go to the Milton District Hospital Foundation,” Mumtaz Warsi explained. Warsi, and Mehmood Khan are part of the team of organizers. MAM presents an annual cheque for $5,000 to MDHF, “That makes it a very unique event,” Warsi
said.
Monday July 1, 2019 marked Canada’s 152nd Birthday. Celebrations started June 30, when the Halton Gujarati Seniors’ Samaj (HGSS) hosted its party at the Lions’ Club Hall.
The event started with dignitaries led by Mayor Gord Krantz being led their table by Latin dancers. The audience settled into an afternoon-long program that echoed Canada’s multiculturalism. Performances included the Chinese Arts Society from both Milton, and Mississauga, as well as an Elvis impersonator.
The sound of the horns marked the end of a period at the Milton Orthotics and Wellness Centre’s annual Game On Street Hockey Tournament. June 22, 2019 marked the seventh edition of the event, which, raised $30,000 for the Reach Out Centre for Kids (ROCK).
Miltonians may have enjoyed their last Canada Day festivities at the Milton Fairgrounds. After more than 20 years of providing our community with a yearly celebration, the Milton Canada Day Committee will be retiring in 2019.
Once joined together with the Milton Santa Claus Parade Committee, the two events split off once they gained traction within the community. Committee Member of 15 years and Sponsorship Chair Pat Rideout explains, “As each event grew, it was decided that they should be separate entities.” The event was first hosted at Rotary Park but quickly outgrew the space and moved to its current location at the Milton Fairgrounds.
According to Cliff Barron, it’s alive and well! The Milton market is strong, as homes are consistently in demand and this has been a good year so far. Plus, the mortgage interest rates are still good, he says.
