On April 2nd was World Autism Awareness Day in Milton. Milton residents joined Mayor Krantz and dignitaries for the flag raising and proclamation at Milton Town Hall.
“The flag-raising event in Milton has quickly become my favorite time of the year. Four years ago, I was diagnosed with Autism and ADHD, and as an adult, I felt lost and uncertain about my path. However, everything changed when I connected with Melanie and Andrew through a friend. Together, we began organizing these meaningful events, and a online Support Group. The Neurodivergent Community of Milton. “ said Carly Whitman.
“Now in our third year, the event has grown immensely. Since my diagnosis, I’ve transformed into a more authentic version of myself, and much of that growth comes from advocating for and celebrating our community. These events provide a space for those who wish to learn and offer support, fostering a sense of unity and understanding.” Continued Carly.
“Autism is not a barrier, it’s who they are as a person. I love working with children and watch them bloom in social and emotional development, Gross motor, cognitive development, speech and language. They are unique in their own way and they should keep reaching for the stars” said Melanie Foxs. Melanie has been helping organize the flag raising in Milton for 6 years and values having her son a part of it.
“To me early intervention and mental health is key for part of a child success. The raising of the flag teaches me that every person has a story and should be celebrated no matter who they are. It takes a village to raise one child. I also got to meet Carly and Andrew through this event. They are great co hosts and changed my life to believe that autism is not a barrier.” Continued Melanie.
