On Saturday July 22, the Muslim Association of Milton (MAM) held its 9th annual BBQ and fundraising event at the grounds of the Croatian Club on Thompson Road. The first BBQ event started out 9 years ago as a way for the Muslim community to connect with the general Milton community. It was also a way to raise funds for the Milton District Hospital Foundation (MDHF). Each year, the event manages to grow in size and is attended by more people – this year was no exceptions.

Saturday’s early morning rainy conditions threatened to derail the event but quickly vanished by mid-afternoon, creating the perfect temperate conditions for the BBQ. MAM was honoured to host several special guests, including Milton Mayor Gord Krantz, Regional Chair Gary Carr, MPP Indira Naidoo-Harris, Mississauga MP Iqra Khalid, Milton Town councillors Colin Best, Mike Cluett, Arnold Huffman and Rick Di Lorenzo), and Chairman of the Board of MDHF Brian Penman, as well as many other respected guests.

Mayor Krantz, Chair Carr, MP Khalid, and MPP Naidoo-Harris addressed the crowd, noting how well the Muslim community have settled in Milton and all over Halton region. They acknowledged that the BBQ event is a remarkable way to celebrate our Canadian togetherness and share our successes. Chairman Penman thanked the MAM for believing in the vision of the MDHF and for supporting the hospital with its financial donations over the past 8 years. MAM again pledged to donate $5,000 to the Hospital this year.

Guests and community members enjoyed fresh air, sampled delicious foods and treats, and did a little bit of catching up with old friends (and make new ones!) while strolling the beautifully landscaped grounds. No MAM BBQ would be complete without serenading the kids with a magic show, bouncy castles, a puppet show, and lots of treats that left the kids wanting for more. Many of the guests remarked that they can’t wait for next year’s BBQ.
