Milton recognized the best of the best at the recent Chamber of Commerce “Milton Excellence Awards” in October. This annual awards ceremony has been a tradition in Milton since 1961 when the Milton Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion first started the Community Awards for “Citizen of the Year”.

In 1973 the Milton Chamber of Commerce took over the tradition, and in expanded it by adding additional honours. The chamber as since renamed the ceremony to the “Milton Excellence Awards” and this year they recognized three amazing individuals.

Volunteer of the Year – Annie Lu
This year’s winner has volunteered thousands of hours to organizations across Milton. Over the last year alone, she has served as Co-Chair of the Parent Council at Martin Street Public School, Chapter Lead at Canada Learning Code, Team Manager and Head Coach at Milton Stags Basketball Team, Foster Family for the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides, and Programs Director at Milton Pickleball Association.

Citizen of the Year – Georgia Shaw
This year’s winner is a Life Member of the Milton Legion. She has been the Legion’s Chief Steward for over 20 years, supporting veterans in our community. She has raised over $70,000 in bottle drive proceeds for the Townsend Smith Foundation, an organization committed to bringing Hospice care to our community. Georgia quietly goes about her duties at the Milton Legion, but she also involves herself in various fundraising activities for the Legion. If you have
ever attended any of these events, you would see her going above and beyond to make sure that these events were successful.
