We have a new sports athlete who will be representing Canada on the world stage in October. On August 27th Matthew Lippa won the Canadian Bocce title and will be representing us in the World Seniors Bocce Men’s Championship in Turkey from October 17-20th 2024.

Bocce, or bocce ball as it’s usually called developed in Italy with ancestry going back to the Roman Empire. Bocce is a common sport in both Italy and much of southern and western europe. Through Italian immigration it’s made its way to both north and south america with leagues now across the world even as far as Australia. Thanks to Milton’s historical large Italian population originally in the Milton Heights area, Bocce has always had a place in our
town.

As a child, Matthew Lippa learned all about the game of Bocce from his nonno (grandfather) Salvatore who
MATTHEW LIPPA by Rick Di Lorenzo will soon be representing Canada on the world Stage bought him his first bocce set at the age of 10.

Matthew loved the sport and became a natural at it. He has perfected his skills of precision and distance and now will be Canada’s representative at the international level.

Tonight Matthew had a warm send off at the Italian Cultural Centre of Milton (ICCM). Where Mayor Krantz presented him with an official acknowledgment from the Town of Milton on his accomplishments. Mayor Krantz is no stranger to the game of Bocce, growing up in the Milton Heights area himself the Mayor became familiar with the game at a young age.

Matthew gave people today a demonstration of bocce at ICCM’s 4 bocce ball courts which are maintained by ICCM’s volunteers and sponsors including Tom Dal Bello and Frank Pedulla (life long members of ICCM).
