The Hindu Community in Halton &Hamilton (HCHH) organized its 4th annual Kawad Yatra on 6th August 2022.

Kawad Yatra is the annual pilgrimage of devotees of Shiva, known as Kawariyas, to the Hindu pilgrimage places of Haridwar, Gaumukh and Gangotri and Sultanganj in India to get the holy waters of the Ganges River. HCHH started their Yatra (parade) from Milton and walked to the Vaishno Devi Temple in Oakville.

Nearly 100 devotees participated in the Yatra (parade) with the desire to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva.

The streets of Milton saw the devotees wearing tripundra tilak (a special mark worn by Shiva devotees on the forehead), chanting ‘Har Har Mahadev’ and ‘Bam Bam Bole.’ The whole path came alive with the celebrations and energy of the devotees.

Milton Mayor, Mr. Gordon Krantz and Town Councillor, Mr. Rick Di Lorenzo, joined the celebrations. They performed the Jalabhishek ritual for Lord Shiva and extended his best wishes to the Hindu Community. Councillor Rick walked with the Kawariyas the entire journey.

HCHH president Arunesh Giri said, “HCHH is grateful to have such outstanding elected officials like Mayor Krantz and Councillor Rick, who respect others’ religious and cultural practices and ensure all Miltonians feel inclusive and welcomed in the community. I want to thank the Halton Region Police Services for the three cruisers which ensured our safety and the smooth functioning of traffic during our Yatra.”
