Walk in Milton

March 8, 2024 is International Women’s Day, a global celebration of the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. This day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. On this day CFUW (Canadian Federation of University Women) Milton organized their annual Women’s Day Walk along Main Street in downtown Milton.

Starting from Milton Town Hall the walk featured both CFUW, Milton Salvation Army, Craig Kielburger Secondary School student council and students, MP Adam van Koeverden, Milton Community Resource Centre, elected officials, Bonnie Crombie leader of the Ontario Liberal Party, Milton Councillors, as well as other participating residents. The walk was open to all to attend. Free coffee was donated for participants by the Tim Horton’s Sdao family.

Milton Town Councillor John B. Challinor read out the Mayor’s proclamation and then was assisted by Milton Town Staff in raising the International Women’s Day Flag at Milton Town Hall. “Everyone can choose to challenge gender bias and inequality and everyone can choose to seek out and celebrate women’s achievements. Collective action and shared ownership for driving gender parity is what makes the goals of International Women’s Day successful” were words read out loud from the Mayor’s Proclamation.

Bonnie Crombie was then invited to the podium by CFUW to say a few words. “Women’s rights are human’s rights” said Crombie.
“I am challenging you to be unabashedly ambitious. Will you do that? We are going to make change and do it together. Women need to be a critical force to do that. “ “I want you when you go home today, please thank your mothers and do something very special in life because they are that one person that will be there for you unconditionally for you your entire lives. They will be that inspiration. That role model that your mother is. Today we are celebrating all women, no matter who they are, the young mothers, the women who raising her family and has a disability herself.” “You are going to make a difference. All you need to do is decide what path you are on, focus on it, and you will achieve great things. That cup of ambition, and you go for it, so Happy International Women’s Day”.
