Chef Melani Bastian is determined and tireless!

She recalls how the worthwhile cause of No One Goes Hungry started in Milton on November 1st 2020: “Along with volunteers we made 350 hot meals and gave away 50 GOOD food bags from Food For Life at Caribbean Vibes on Main Street East in Milton. Within one month the program (NOGH) grew and added Oakville on a Saturday from the QEPCCC from 3pm to 5pm. On Jan 7th 2021 NOGH we added Acton & Georgetown.”

Melani adds: “With many amazing volunteers from each town pouring in, the program has now grown to serving over 1400 meals per week and giving out over 100 GOOD food bags and over 100 Halton Food For Thought snack bags for the students.

“Help is given by community partners: Food For Life, Salvation Army Kai, Georgetown Bread Basket, Michael Foundation, Louie’s Diner, La Rose, Optimist Club, Knox Church, Milton Bible Church, Caribbean Vibes Milton, and many others who have donated their time and money.”

Besides many volunteers for NOGH in Milton, members of Knox Church in Milton have helped to cook, make packages and deliver the food. The congregation continues to raise donations and handed a cheque to NOGH at the end of May 2021. Knox members, coordinated by Aileen All ore, run the programme every second Sunday. Melani would like to involve all the churches in the area.

All the NOGH food for the entire Halton area is prepared in Milton. Food preparation has been moved to Milton Bible Church because the amount of space needed has become too much for the original café.

“We have a whole bunch of volunteers: high school students, seniors and all ages! We promote everyone to come and help!” said Melani, “We now need help with delivery to all the parts of Halton that we cover. We supply fresh food to seniors, newcomers and vulnerable people. No questions asked.”

“This program has no end date and has no intention of slowing down.” Melani Bastian says, “Let’s get Halton Hunger Free together!!”

The program keeps growing and as it is now being registered as a nonprofit organization they can strive to do more. Melani asks Halton residents to email NOGHVOLUNTEERS@GMAIL.COM and join the growing team or NOGHhaltonON@GAMIL.COM to register for meals to be delivered.
