February is Black History Month and this month Grace Anglican Church hosted an “African Dinner” for Milton residents. It included different food dishes created by members of the Congregation from countries in Africa and the Caribbean. It also featured some trivia and learnings about Black History from both Canada and the rest of the world.
Two recent items in Black History for both Canada and Milton….
Jean Augustine, the first Black Canadian women elected to parliament was pivotal in getting the month proclaimed back in 1995. She is no stranger to Milton, having visited us more than once.
Mary Long Bishop became Milton’s first black person to sit on Milton town Council in 1989. She went on to work in social services and eventually was appointed an adjudicator to the social benefits tribunal. In 1997 she was named Milton Citizen of the Year (she was on the cover of the Milton Villager magazine on February 2013 during the Mayor’s Gala for the Arts which she supported).
Milton also has a diverse and active African Caribbean community that is responsible for hosting many past Black History Month events in both Milton and Halton.
