The Rohingya are a Muslim minority group indigenous to the Rakhine state of Myanmar. They have suffered persecution since 1982, when the state stripped them of their citizenship.
There are two Eid holidays on the Muslim calendar. The first, known as Eid Al-Fitr is held following the month of Ramadan.
At age 164, Milton Fall Fair is older than the town itself at 160. It’s become a fall tradition for many families, and a regular stop for area schools. Every year it offers new, and exciting exhibits, and shows. 2017 is no exception. The fair is held September 22-24 at the Milton Fair Grounds.
St. Abanoub is a Coptic child saint who sacrificed himself as a martyr at the age of 11. For the last four years Milton’s Coptic Christian Church holds a festival marking the sacrifice. Abanoub’s feast day was July 31, 2017. This year’s edition was held July 29.

Milton’s Pakistani Community turned out in their patriotic green and white to mark Pakistan’s 70th anniversary. The festivities took place at the Milton Sports Centre August 12, two days before Pakistan Day. The evening was arranged by the Canadian Pakistani Association of Halton (CPAH).

2017 marks Canada’s 150th birthday, and Milton’s 160th birthday. The Islamic Cultural Centre of Milton (ICCM) wanted to mark both occasions, and the end of Ramadan. They held a fun fair July 15, 2017 in the afternoon. “All we want to give to the community is fun.

2017 marks the tenth anniversary of Miracle on Main St; an annual toy drive organized by the Tiger Jeet Singh Foundation. The campaign kicked off at the annual Teeing off for a Miracle golf tournament held June 16.

The Milton District Hospital Foundation (MDHF) started out with a goal of raising $30 million towards the hospital expansion. They held their annual Gift of Life Gala May 27, 2017 at Rattlesnake Point Golf Club. Emcee Peter Conteducca compared the fundraising drive to a race. “We’re on the final lap,” he described. The foundation has raised $29 million so far.

It started five years ago as a conversation between Milton Orthotics and Wellness Centre Owner Angelo Posteraro and Rotary Club member Rod McLachlan. The two men wanted to help the community, and get kids active. “It supported physical activity, and supported a charity.”

Giving back to the community is part of the Ahmadiyya’s faith. The spirit of generosity com was on display Sunday May 14, at the second annual Run for Milton. Funds raised went to the Milton District Hospital Foundation (MDHF.)
