On June 6th two Milton teenagers helped organize a peaceful protest in support of Black Lives Matter. This was the latest in a series of rally’s that have occurred since the release of a video showing a police officer kneeling on the neck of a black man, George Floyd, who subsequently fell still and died while the officer’s knee was still on him.

Residents started the peaceful march at Derry and Ontario and slowly made their way to the community park near the Milton Sports Centre by Santa Maria blvd and Derry. Cars honked in support as they passed by Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) Chief Stephen Tanner issued a statement prior to the event that the demonstration has the full support of HRPS. “If you are taking part, please know that you have the full support of the Halton Regional Police Service.” He said. “During these demonstrations, we will ensure you have the support you need to exercise your lawful right to demonstrate peacefully”.

“We started this protest because we didn’t see many protests happening in small towns like Millton. Racism happens everywhere and we wanted to fight it here too. We believe that Milton needed to all come together to fight what is and has been happening because it can’t continue. This fight isn’t over yet so keep doing everything you can, like signing petitions, donating and further educating yourself. “ said Sidney Mende-Gibson, who along with Tori Allen helped organize the event.

Organizers asked attendees to please wear a mask to protect both themselves and others and encouraged social distancing during the event. Mayor Gord Krantz who spoke at the event said he felt it was the largest peaceful rally he’s ever seen in Milton.

“I want to acknowledge that as a community we must recognize the injustice occurring in society. In Milton we pride ourselves on inclusion. We must constantly be committed to this conversation, especially in our roles as elected officials, as we approach decision-making and public policy so our racialized communities see themselves and are reflected in how we build a complete community. You must feel safe and welcomed to work, live and play in Milton,” said Mayor Krantz in a statement.

Sidney Mende-Gibson has asked if people could be made aware of these 4 petitions circulating online and for residents to please educate themselves on each and sign if they are in support.
