Dozens of local and international artists, business and community leaders packed the Milton Holiday Inn on August 21st to raise much needed funds for the Sahara Cancer Hospital in a remote area of Pakistan.

The Sahara fundraiser was the second event in Milton to raise funds for this initiative during the summer. On August 17th the Multicultural Azadi Festival included international musical artist Abrar Ul Haq who is also the founder and chairman of the Sahara for Life Trust foundation which is sponsoring the hospital in Narowal, Pakistan.

Both events raised well over $100,000 including various sponsorships of hospital rooms and equipment. Local franchise owners and community leaders Ijaz Lakhanpal and Irfan Lakhanpal both donated hospital rooms. Prominent Chicago business owner and philanthropist, Israr Malik, also donated a room in addition to a hospital ward. Other donors included: Asma Mirza, Mahreen Haris, Shazia and Imran Farooq, and celebrity make artists, Farah and Saleem Butt. Media sponsors included Arshad Bhatti (Toronto 360 TV), Ovais Iqbal and Badar Munir.

Sahara for Life Trust is a charitable organization that is recognized by the United Nations and certified with the Pakistan Center for Philanthropy (PCP) and accredited by charity commissions within Canada, the US and the UK. The organization supports healthcare and education projects in underserved regions in addition to providing disaster relief. The Sughra Shafi Medical Complex was the inaugural project which is a 600-bed certified general teaching hospital that serves over 4.5 million people. The Sahara Cancer Hospital is the organization’s current major initiative which will be a state-of-the-art facility for underprivileged patients.
