In a city rife with various community events and fundraisers, Milton Show Choir offers a unique presentation at their Annual Open Mic Night. The jampacked event was held November 9, 2019 this year at the Royal Canadian Legion in Downtown Milton.
Milton Show Choir is a local not-forprofit organization, which boasts award winning teams that have made a name for themselves in recent years. The group offers a series of workshops and performance opportunities for children and youth in grades 3-12, as well as a new choir developed for adults and teens. Led by Artistic Directors Melanie Silva and Bob Hall, the goal of MSC is to “create a positive learning environment where our members enhance their joy of music, develop new friendships, and have a great time together!”
Touted as a “Family Social and Fundraiser,” the call out encouraged potential participants to “dust off the guitar, prepare a family skit, sing a song, [or] recite a poem.” Most participants chose to show off their pipes on the evening in question, though not all singers were directly a part of the MSC organization. Laura Raub, age 12 is not currently involved with Milton Show Choir, but took the opportunity to perform in public by singing a beautiful rendition of Adele’s Hello. Her mother, Cheryl Rak, heard about the event through Milton Area Female Entrepreneurs online.
Other entertainers represented the Show Choir’s top tier – including Gleam choir performer Amber Linton, who used her exceptional voice to belt out Stevie Nick’s Edge of Seventeen. “The reason I like [show choir] is because it gives me an excuse to sing at the top of my lungs whenever I want to. Plus, Milton Show Choir is like Family.”
Amber’s sentiments were echoed by MSC Artistic Director Melanie Silva as she described the important bonding experiences participants are involved in. “This is our second Open Mic Night. Our goal is to host it annually, to include the wider community, and to put forth an affordable program year round. The fundraising supports Milton Show Choir’s team building excursions including our trip to Medieval Times and performance workshop at Disney.”
The Open Mic event also included a silent auction fundraiser made up of gift baskets, gourmet treats, kitchenware, home décor, and even a bottle of Dom Perignon!
