avid Coulter is the lead designer of Milton’s Annual Haunted House at the Milton Mall. His dedication shows as he hangs the black and orange banner outside the designated space more than one month before the Haunted House opens. The following morning, the first set of young volunteers arrive to begin decorating. Coulter describes the construction: “We create a skeleton of 1×2 wood pieces beneath black tents. Once we have it erected, we wrap the wood with a black plastic skin to create pathways.” All puns intended.

The Haunted House has found its home in the Mall for the last 7+ years. It started out in the garage of a local Milton Town Councillor and has expanded to over 1500 square feet in its current location.

Coulter started with the project by acting and selling tickets, but now manages its complete creation. Its a family affair too – his wife Kristen dressed up in 2017 and refused to come out for lunch because she was having so much fun scaring visitors. Coulter’s 13 year old son Thomas not only takes on a character as well, he also creates a Haunted House at his school in the classroom. Connor, age 9, refuses to enter the House once the animatronics have been set up.

For those who feel they might relate to Connor’s preference, Coulter is offering guests an escape halfway through the experience. For the many who choose to continue on, they’ll encounter even more witches, werewolves and zombies. Those familiar with classic horror movies might also recognize creepy characters such as Freddy and Jason. The figures and props are kept in the basement of the mall, and the collection of bones, limbs, chains and dolls rise each Halloween to frighten the general public.

The Haunted House welcomes all ages, and has gained a great deal of popularity over the years. The wait time can stretch up to 45 mins but is well worth it as people in the queue listen to the screams and giggles of those already inside. The House offers admission by donation, and proceeds beyond the annual construction are donated to the Milton District Hospital Foundation.
