On Tuesday July 18th at the popular Mohawk Inn, the doors opened at 6:30pm to a crowd of eager families looking forward to a spectacular magic show. The event was so well attended and so enjoyable that the Mohawk Inn will most likely be the venue for more of Tyler’s appearances in the future.

Magician Tyler Fergus is well known in Milton for his Magic Camps; his illusions; his support of the United Way and for his compassion. Tyler believes that one small act of kindness can change the world.

In 2016, Tyler was awarded the Platinum Award for Family Entertainment in the Milton’s Choice awards.

He said “I am passionate to share my gift of magic with everyone. My inspiration stemmed from my dyslexia, as I realized magic was all about visual illusions. I knew that despite my difficulty with reading, I could still learn magic. Also my dad inspired me a lot, and was my biggest fan. He was always cheering me on, and when I got a new trick he would have me perform it for him over and over. I learned to do magic at the age of 8 when I spent 3 months in a body cast due to a surgery to correct my spina bifida. I was given a book, and I studied and practiced every day.”

Tyler was also diagnosed as haemophiliac as a child. The Haemophilia Society puts kids into summer camps and he chose Magic Camp. Tyler continues to motivate magic in others in Milton through the summer. One magic camp for children 6-12 years is coming up in August.

The first act in the Magic Show involved an intriguing cupboard which was set up centre stage.

The lights dimmed as a pretty little girl (Tyler’s daughter Hannah) in a yellow satin dress sat in front. She stepped inside and Tyler and his sidekick Magician Jaks poked long sticks through the sides of the cupboard. This was a popular trick with much tension and relief when the girl emerged safe and sound. Hannah later said the trick was “just kind of hard” however she didn’t want to “give away the secret but it’s not scary!”

Magician Jaks, who also regularly performs magic at the KOA camp in Campbellville, held the audience’s attention while smashing sunglasses; disappearing ketchup bottles and mind reading using cards.

Tyler’s varied acts involved scarves; a bunny called Fluffy; an egg; fire; and a beautiful white dove. In his favourite trick, he changed the pages of a colouring book from black and white to coloured to blank. Under a chair in the audience was a piece of paper on which was written a large 5 or 6 digit number. This was proved (and confirmed on a phone) to be the sum of several random numbers given by members of the audience. For his final trick Tyler was buckled into a strait jacket then placed inside a box from which he eventually escaped.

His illusions were impressive and mind boggling. His involvement of a number of the members of the audience was non-threatening and fun. His enthusiasm and his ability to overcome so many health issues through his life are inspiring. He has a great personality and is a Milton treasure!
