The smell of freshly baked bread, vibrantly decorated cakes with icing that begs to be touched, and customers busy selecting deli meats while catching up with neighbours waiting in line. This is a small slice of what La Rose bakery happily serves up on a daily basis.  This bakery, which is so much more than just a bakery, has been a staple in the town of Milton since 1982.  This year they are celebrating 35 years of memories and there are no plans to stop.

“We are so proud to have been here this long. All four of our kids work here and it’s been a pleasure seeing our customer’s own families grow throughout the years,” says Maggie Lizzi, who owns the beloved bakery with her husband Cosimo. She remembers the first day they opened, as it was the first time she dropped her small daughters at a day care – big moments she remembers fondly.  Though they’re all grown up, their four kids (and a few grandkids!) are common fixtures in the bakery. Sal, Domenic, Emily and Maria all have different and vital roles within the family run business – everything from manager to pastry chef.

The couple started their business in the same plaza but in a different space which offered just 1500 square feet.  “When we first opened, it was just a deli and a bakery,” says Cosimo Lizzi.  He says that a year later they moved again to a different unit, still within the plaza, but this time with double the amount of space. Finally in 2001, they settled into the spot they currently have. “When we moved here, I said to my wife what are we are going to do with all this space?!”  It wouldn’t be long till the Lizzi family figured that out. The bakery now includes their famous cakes, pastry (Zeppola is a Lizzi family favourite), a fresh, home-cooked  hot table with a menu that is changed daily, produce, groceries and gift items.   Their deli boasts over 80 different types of meat and nearly 100 varieties of cheese. There are no plans of stopping says Maggie. In fact, the bakery hopes to expand their offerings of gluten-free and vegan selections.

However, Maggie explains that La Rose is as much about community as it is about the food. “The couple are proud organizers and supporters of several events such as the 35th Gala at Rattlesnake Golf Club in support of the new Milton hospital as well the annual Italia Fest.

More information about its fabulous breads, foods and special events can be found on social media which Maggie says her son updates daily. Facebook, Instagram and Twitter are all ways to keep in touch. However, both Maggie and Cosimo agree that the best way see what LaRose is all about, is to drop in and say hello.
