August 13th, 2019 was cause for celebration as families gathered to observe Eid ul Adha, at a gathering hosted by local food blogger and Instagram star Tabassum Wyne of Kashmiri Foodie. Wyne partnered with the Milton Federal Liberal Association and new Liberal candidate Adam van Koeverden, and the party was held at their Main Street office in downtown Milton.

Eid ul Adha occurs at the end of Hajj, the pilgrimage made by many Muslims each year to the holy sanctuary in Mecca. It’s a celebration of the ability of the human being, and an affirmation that whatever comforts are given up will be translated into immense light, blessings, and lasting joy.

Kashmiri Foodie, who has over 13 thousand followers on Instagram, is known for her outgoing personality, and her affinity for healthy and simple family recipes. Regarding the August 13th event she says, “I wanted the community to come together to celebrate Eid. I wanted it to be relaxed and enjoyable for all ages. I have two toddlers so I just thought ‘What would they love?,’ and thus the idea came to light. The event was a huge success and everyone enjoyed it!”

The event was very family friendly, with a craft activity table that was bustling with creative kids, a cupcake decorating station, free henna designs by young artists, and a book reading with guest author Helal Musleh. An elaborate “Eid Muburak” balloon creation lent itself beautifully to photographs. The dinner buffet was plentiful, and featured delicious wraps and manakeesh from Paramount Fine Foods Milton.

Adam van Koeverden was on site for much of the event chatting with families. When asked about his involvement, he said, “It’s an important holiday for the community. I thought it would be fun! Like a lot of people in Milton, I’m learning about other cultures – and the best way to learn is to do.”
